International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO)
The IBO, founded in 1968, is a non-profit educational foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland.
It offers three programmes to schools:
» The Primary Years Programme
» The Middle Years Programme
» The Diploma Programme
There are nearly 2402 authorized IB World schools in 129 countries.
The IB programmes are more practical and application-based. They have a broader spectrum of subjects that leads to the all-round development of students. The IB assessments test students' knowledge, not their memory and speed. The focus of the IB pedagogy is on 'how to learn' rather than 'what to learn'. The purpose of the IB is to create global citizens.
The Primary Years Programme
For the age group 3 to 12, the PYP is a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning, with an international curriculum model that provides guidelines for what students should learn, a teaching methodology and assessment strategies. After consultation with the IBO, and provided that certain conditions are met, schools enjoy much flexibility in terms of developing the curriculum, the language of instruction, and the languages taught.

The Middle Years Programme
This programme is for the age group 11 to 16. The students at this stage are in a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. This programme provides them with discipline, skills and challenging standards and also promotes creativity and flexibility. The IB and Cambridge curricula place a great emphasis on developing students' personal value systems to guide their own lives as thoughtful members of local communities and the larger world.
The IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma programme is a comprehensive and rigorous programme for students aged between sixteen and nineteen. Based on the pattern of no single country, it is a deliberate compromise between the specialisation required in some national systems and the breadth preferred in others. The IB is highly respected in the UK, USA and Canada largely due to its rich curriculum which includes a core course of the Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS (creativity, action, service). Some universities in USA and Canada exempt IB holders from certain courses, cutting down on the cost of education for the student. While the IB Diploma is a challenging and demanding programme, it is also well within the capability of average but hard-working students.
The student who satisfies the demands of the IB demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of the subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a competitive world. Since its inception in 1968, the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise.
